GCC ID OCR: options and what to check
For GCC identity cards — Qatar ID, Emirates ID, Saudi Iqama, Kuwait Civil ID and Bahrain CPR — the useful question is which checks an OCR service runs on the ID number and dates, and what it does when they fail. Mahad OCR reads these cards with two readers and applies each country’s number rules as evidence; it does not query any GCC government system.
What to check
| Card | Number check in Mahad OCR | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Qatar ID (QID) | Structure; birth year vs date of birth; country code vs nationality | The number agrees with the card |
| Emirates ID | 784 prefix; Luhn check digit; birth year vs date of birth; TD1 MRZ digits | Number read correctly; dates proven by MRZ |
| Saudi ID / Iqama | Luhn check digit; Hijri ↔ Gregorian date agreement when both are returned | Number and dates read consistently |
| Kuwait Civil ID | Check digit; birth year vs date of birth | Number read correctly |
| Bahrain CPR | Format only (no published check digit); birth month vs date of birth | Consistency only |
What to ask any provider
Which of these number rules it applies, whether it returns the Arabic name beside the English one, how it handles Hijri dates, whether it reads the MRZ on the back, and whether failures send the card to a person or are silently accepted.
What no OCR service can tell you from the image alone
Whether the card is currently valid with the issuing authority. That needs an official channel. Mahad OCR reports evidence from the card and never a verdict that a card is real.
When Mahad OCR is not the right choice
- You need an official government verification of the ID — use the authority’s own channel.
- You need NFC chip reading or face matching — not offered.
- You need Oman ID number rules — no Oman-specific number check exists in Mahad OCR today; cards are read, but with two-reader evidence only.
Frequently asked questions
Which GCC ID cards can Mahad OCR read?
Qatar ID, Emirates ID, Saudi ID and Iqama, Kuwait Civil ID and Bahrain CPR have number rules. Other GCC cards are read with two-reader evidence only.
Does Mahad OCR check IDs with GCC governments?
No. All checks use what is printed on the card.
Is the Arabic name returned?
Yes, where printed, as name_arabic beside full_name.
What happens when a number rule fails?
The rule is reported as failed in result.verification.evidence and the card goes to review instead of being verified.
Why is Bahrain CPR format-only?
There is no published check digit for the CPR, so Mahad OCR checks its structure and that its birth month agrees with the printed date — consistency, not proof.
